The Future of Payments is Here: Yazara is Now MPoC Certified

What is the PCI MPoC Standard?

Payment Card Industry’s Security Standards Council announced the heavily anticipated PCI MPoC Standard in November of 2022, building on the earlier SPoC and CPoC standards. As a pioneer in the development of SoftPOS solutions, Yazara developed and implemented the first solution with PIN and was granted the first solution with a Full SDK certification by the schemes. Consistent with our leadership position, Yazara is now the first MPoC SDK to be certified by PCI.

What are the changes that MPoC is bringing?

The new MPoC standard is built on the existing SPoC and CPoC standards and is focused on providing increased flexibility for payment acceptance by specifying an architecture, product constructs, and a security framework to be used to develop, deploy, use, and maintain COTS-based devices to accept contactless payments. It does so, primarily, by including the entry of both PIN and contactless cardholder data on the same COTS device and by recognizing that there are different ways in which card-based payments may be accepted securely in face-to-face environments using these standard devices.

The Benefits of MPoC for Merchants of All Sizes:

While there are many benefits that the new MPoC standard can offer, a few key examples that can be seen benefiting merchants include:

  • Ubiquity: A single platform or SDK that can handle transactions of any size, using any contactless payment instrument.

  • Device management: Merchants no longer need to worry about connecting payment readers via Bluetooth to their devices.

  • Acceptance growth: More merchants can take advantage of SoftPOS acceptance due to the additional use cases allowed under MPoC, such as semi-attended and offline operations.

What are the differences between MPoC, SPoC and CPoC Standards?

MPoC is the ultimate standard that contains SPoC and CPoC standards.

StandardHigh Level DescriptionMerchant and Customer Pros / Cons
MPoC
  • Allows for the usage of a COTS device, including cardholder PIN verification, to accept contactless (native NFC) payments.
  • Standardizes security (PAN and PIN protection, application protection, data integrity) to enable payment acceptance on COTS devices.
  • Enables cardholder PIN verification.
  • Increased portability and ubiquity without the need for an additional reading device.
  • Standardized security allows for payment acceptance using COTS devices.
  • Provides PIN verification support.
CPoC
  • Allows for the usage of a COTS device to accept contactless (native NFC) payments; does not support cardholder PIN verification.
  • Standardizes security (PAN protection, application protection, data integrity) to enable payment acceptance on COTS devices.
  • Increased portability and ubiquity without the need for an additional reading device.
  • Standardized security allows for payment acceptance using COTS devices.
  • Does not support PIN verification.
SPoC
  • Allows for the usage of a separate card reading device to accept contactless (NFC) payments.
  • Increased portability and ubiquity.
  • Requires an additional reading device.

The Importance of MPoC for the Yazara SoftPOS Technology:

As one of the first movers in MPoC adoption and certification, we will be providing a leading-edge, innovative solution to our clients and to their customers. Market research tells us that contactless adoption is steadily increasing in many markets and in some markets, seeing exponential growth, demanding new solutions to fill an existing void.

Across the globe, the market size for SoftPOS solutions is expected to be greater than $1B by 2026, consisting of:

  • Untapped merchants: $600M – consisting of equipping just 25% of the 250+ M unbanked merchants worldwide by 2027.

  • Replacement market: $425M – consisting of 25-35% of traditional POS and mPOS terminals reaching their end-of-life and being replaced by SoftPOS solutions.

  • Terminal expansion market: $136M – consisting of 10% increases annually and addressing large merchant needs for low-cost, “off-the-shelf” solutions to expand contactless payment acceptance during high traffic periods.

This translates to significant growth in merchant revenues, frictionless consumer experiences, and simplified operational processes not having to deal with cash transactions, both for the merchant and their customers.

How will MPoC help merchants boost customer experience?

At Yazara, we view MPoC as the gold-standard and one of the most exciting and impactful developments for contactless acceptance.  As a modular standard that promotes flexibility for payment solution development, additional functionality can easily be integrated and brings together mobile application development and payment acceptance.  The new standard will continue to support different integration formats and hosting solutions, allowing Yazara to provide customized offerings aligned with the go-to-market strategies of our clients and prospects.

By providing a SoftPOS solution certified with MPoC, we anticipate significant adoption of electronic payments and increased ubiquity for SMEs globally that are not able to accept contactless payments today.  We also see larger merchants looking to supplement their existing POS infrastructure to address current pain points such as queue busting and other use cases, or to reduce costs and replace some or all of their existing POS devices with SoftPOS solutions.  Likewise, the modularity will promote and accelerate the transition from SoftPOS to SmartPOS, as additional value-added services can easily be integrated into the solution beyond traditional payment acceptance and provide superior customer experiences.
